Alumnus Thanks God

November 25, 2008

Dr. Stan Gale, M. Div., 1986, reflects on his Westminster experience and offers us a thanksgiving reminder as we gather with family and friends for the holiday - taking a break from studies, ministries and various vocations.

"'My seminary experience wasn't worth two cents.  I had to learn everything worthwhile once I got out and got into the ministry.'  So commented an elderly pastor who approached me following a service I led.

"As the pastor related the total disconnect between the theological foundation given him and his pastoral ministry of the Word and his great disdain for his seminary experience, my reaction was two-fold.  I felt deep regret for him and profound gratitude to God for what He had given me.

"My experience at Westminster could not have contrasted more.

"I continue to thank God for all that I received in my theological education and ministry formation at Westminster, a well from which I continue to draw to this day.

"Remember this as we gather with family and friends for the Thanksgiving holiday:

Psalm 9:1-2,
"I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High."

"Father in heaven, who showers us with good things, we thank you for the opportunities you give to us.  We thank you for the opportunity to be in class and we thank you for the opportunity to take a break.  Whether we study or rest, help us to honor your Son Jesus, whose name we bear. Amen."
