Dr. David Wells, Distinguished Research Professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, will be speaking and his lecture is entitled "The Stupidity of Preaching and the Contemporary Moment."

The Gaffin Lecture on Theology Culture and Missions is a lecture in biblical or systematic theology to honor the work of Dr. Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., professor of Biblical and systematic theology, emeritus.  Past lectures have been given by Drs. Bruce Waltke, Robert Letham, Paul Wells, Al Mohler, and D. A. Carson.

Biography of Dr. Wells

Dr. David Wells is the Distinguished Research Professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, South Hamilton, Massachusetts.

In 1966 he earned the Bachelor of Divinity degree from the University of London, in 1967 a Master of Theology in church history from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, and in 1969 the Doctor of Philosophy degree in theology from the University of Manchester in England.  He was appointed a post-doctoral research fellow at Yale Divinity School from 1973 to 1974. Dr. Wells is the author or editor of a number of books, many of which are currently available at the Westminster Bookstore.

Dr. Wells began teaching at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1969, advancing to full professor, and in 1977 he was named the chair of the division of systematic theology.  In 1979, he joined the faculty of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.  In 1991, he was appointed the Andrew Mutch Distinguished Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology, a position he held until 2008.  During this time, he also served as the Academic Dean of Gordon-Conwell’s Charlotte campus from 1998-2000 and after that as Special Assistant to the President for Institutional Planning.

He was elected to the American Theological Society in 1985.  He served on the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization and on its theology working group.  In 1985 he was appointed a Distinguished Lecturer for the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity in London.  From 1989 to 1991, he was the recipient of a major grant for Senior Scholars from the Pew Charitable Trusts.

In recent years, he has been particularly concerned with the developing world.  As a member of the John Stott Ministries board, he has worked to bring the opportunity for advanced theological education for church leaders and to books to seminaries in these countries.  And, more recently, he has been actively involved in working to build orphanages in Africa and to provide these victims of civil wars and AIDS with an education.
